HEV Technology

SatCon currently sells a line of subsystems to HEV integrators. SatCon is using these relationships to qualify its products for the automotive market with a focus on providing products to the fleet, industrial, and military HEV markets.

SatCon is positioning itself as the ‘preferred solution provider’ for a number of auxiliary drivetrain systems. The Company can provide power train and complete auxiliary sub-systems to HEV integrators. Components/sub-systems that the Company is providing to these HEV markets include high voltage servo-motors, amplifiers, DC-DC converter, traction motors and controllers, with plans for introducing other components over the next 12-18 months. These products are based on SatCon’s current line of industrial electronics and motors, and the over 15 years of experience in providing compact, high power solutions to previous electric vehicle, fuel cell vehicle, and HEV programs.

SatCon HEV market components will be provided in a scalable manner so they can be easily integrated into various designs by a number of different vehicle manufacturers. This strategy will provide many benefits to the Company. First, the Company can sell to many competing HEV integrators and providers of HEV drivetrains. Secondly, the Company can use a similar architecture to reduce its design cost while providing different components to different HEV companies. Finally, this strategy allows SatCon to remain at the tier-3, tier-4 automotive supplier level to avoid any of the challenges and difficulties which tier-2 suppliers face in their relationships with OEMs. There are initiatives planned over the next 12 months that will provide tangible milestones as the Company expands its line of components to the HEV market.
