HEV Technology > DC-DC Converters
One example of a modular converter is a system that has been designed
and built for the next-generation electric ships, using an
Integrated Power System. The electrical distribution system planned for
these ships includes a DC distribution system, with redundant power buses – referred
to as Integrated Fight-Through Power, or IFTP.
SatCon has designed the DC-DC converter used in this system, which
is expandable in 100kW increments up to 3MW. The converter
takes an input of 1000VDC and converts it to a nominal output
of 800VDC, but which is adjustable down to 350VDC.
SatCon has delivered several of these units to the Navy’s Land-Based
Test Site in Philadelphia for test and evaluation.
DC-DC converters have been built for other applications, such as the
electric and hybrid-electric vehicle market. Shown here is a 6 kW Buck-Boost
Converter for Electric Vehicle Battery Charging from 180 to 490VDC; and
a Buck Converter used to convert a hybrid-electric vehicle’s high
voltage bus of 400VDC to 120 amps of 12V power for auxiliary loads.
