SatCon Power Systems Products
Alternative Energy Power Conversion > Stationary Fuel Cell PCS
SatCon
currently sells a line of power conversion systems to stationary
fuel cells providers. SatCon provides these
electronics packages for systems ranging from 25kW to well
into the MW scale class. The market for stationary fuel cells was estimated
to be $900M in 2005, growing to $4.9B in 2010, with strong growth expected
to continue as the commercial onsite premium power and cogeneration
markets drive growth in the 20% range, especially for areas with restrictive
emission standards. These trends can be seen in the recent
activity in the megawatt class power plants with New York, Connecticut, California, and Ontario leading the way with solicitations totaling
several hundred megawatts.
The company has also taken steps to enhance the value proposition of stationary
fuel cell power facilities in the competitive distributed generation market.
To continue driving the competitiveness of the overall stationary fuel
cell system, SatCon has worked to reduce the overall system cost. Continued focus in these cost-out efforts
will ensure that stationary fuel cell power systems gain wider acceptance
in the market, with SatCon well positioned to gain advantage to any additional
orders. Power conversion systems commonly represent 33% of the value of
stationary fuel cell systems.
SatCon's PowerGate™ AE-F Series power converters for fuel cell applications are a critical element of the overall fuel cell plant. SatCon's proprietary control system design enables the fuel cell manufacturer to lower the overall system cost per kW. SatCon PowerGate™ AE-FC can operate in both grid connected and grid independent configurations, and, if required, switch between the two configurations on the fly.
