Grid Support & Power Quality

SatCon currently sells products, which address many issues of grid support, extending from the high-voltage power transmission system to the distributed energy strategy of many utilities and large commercial and industrial customers. The market for power grid support equipment is vast, with the Edison Electric Institute estimating that utilities spend over $12 billion to maintain and upgrade their transmission and distribution systems. Going forward, greater emphasis and investment is being made by utilities to upgrade the carrying capacity of existing power grids than new construction; this will ensure that power electronics gain a greater share of spending as opposed to power line construction. Products from the Company in support of the transmission system include static VAR regulators, wind-farm low-voltage-ride-through devices (see below) and power conversion systems for energy storage technologies (see below).

The move towards distributed power and the increasing requirements for high quality power are also driving the need for better ways to control and manage power onsite at commercial and industrial installations. Products from the Company that target this market include the Rotary Ride-Through Devices and the Static Transfer Switch. The introduction of renewable energy from solar and wind into these small networks also increases the need for an ability to manage the power flows quickly and reliably. As this area continues to grow, the Company will provide additional products for this growing market, which currently suffers from poor power quality. The Company plans to assist this market in integrating on-site renewable or distributed energy resources while maintaining the quality of power their operation demands.

SatCon Power Systems offers an array of “whole-facility” power quality protection and power distribution VAR and Low Voltage Ride-Thru (LVRT) management solutions. These products provide mitigation of electrical disturbances, grid voltage support and grid fault ride-through.
