SatCon Power Systems Products
Grid Support & Power Quality > Medium Voltage Static
Voltage Regulator (MVSVR)
The MV SVR boosts the
whole-facility load voltage during source voltage sags
caused by faults in the utility distribution grid or
in the transmission system. The load voltage boost
is performed within quarter to half cycle enabling
even the most sensitive facility equipment to ride-through
sag events without operational disruptions.
SatCon's patented MV SVR substantially increases reliability
of electric power delivered to your facility load bus. The
MV SVR mitigates voltage sags at minimal capital and operating
costs by providing an improved level of power quality without
the addition of any expensive energy storage device.

When to Use an MV SVR
The MV SVR is designed to provide low cost alternative to
expensive voltage regulators requiring energy storage. As shown
in summary of an EPRI survey of power quality disturbances
for an average site, figure 1, the vast majority of voltage
sags that results in loss of a process critical load are in
the 50 to 90% range of nominal voltage and up to 10 seconds
of duration. The MV SVR fully compensates for these sag levels
preventing the majority of typical facility downtimes to provide
for a quick payback and for high return on investment solution.
Performance:
For source voltage sag compensation, SVR-D provides a more
reliable and more robust performance than any complex power
inverter or low reliability battery based alternative custom
power device solution or Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR).
Cost:
Installed unit
cost and required land footprint of STS-D is about a third
of the cost and of the footprint of the equivalent inverter
based DVR size. The SVR-D has significantly lower operation
and maintenance cost when compared with DVR due to lower
losses (0.3% for SVR vs. 2.0% for DVR), no air conditioning
and energy storage requirements.
Design:
The SVR-D design
is based on specification inputs of a major North American
utility and is fully verified through a comprehensive set
of high voltage, high current, environmental and EMI / EMC
compatibility design tests for utility acceptance.
Environment:
SVR-D does not include environmentally hazardous
transformer oil or energy storage battery. In addition air
conditioning equipment is not required for wasted energy
removal because of its high efficiency operation.
